What is Hypnobirthing?

Hypnobirthing Courses

Hypnobirthing is the name given to a complete ante-natal program giving you the tools you need to enable you to have the birth you want. Hypnobirthing is based on the work of Dr Grantly Dick-Read, upon whose principles the National Childbirth Trust was founded. “In no other animal species,” he wrote in 1933, “is the process of birth apparently associated with any suffering, pain or agony.”

In his book Childbirth Without Fear he observed the ‘fear tension pain cycle’. Hypnobirthing, developed in the 1960s and refined and enhanced up to the present day, seeks to break that cycle with education, hypnosis, breathing techniques, visualisation and other techniques.

Hypnobirthing also enables birth partners to get involved, as often they can feel sidelined during labour, not knowing how to help. Hypnobirthing partners are an integral part of the process and can see the benefits to their partners, themselves and to their baby.

Many people associate hypnobirthing with home births; however this is not necessarily the case. Hypnobirthng is about each individual couple having the most relaxed and positive experience, be that at home, hospital or birthing centre. Hypnobirthing has also been used very successfully in elective and emergency c-sections and helps mums and dads react positively to changing events during labour.

Hypnobirthing has also been shown to increase the chance of a natural delivery and reduce the likelihood of an instrumental delivery or c-section. Read more on the research page!
